Astigmatism is a very common eye condition that affects how clearly you see. It happens when the front surface of the eye is shaped more like a rugby ball rather than a perfectly round football.

Because of this shape, light does not focus evenly at the back of the eye, which can cause blurred, shadowed or distorted vision.

What are the symptoms of astigmatism?

People with astigmatism may notice:

  • Blurred vision

  • Distorted vision

  • Eye strain

  • Headaches

  • Squinting

  • Difficulty reading

  • Tired eyes

  • Problems seeing clearly at night

Some people have mild astigmatism and barely notice it. Others may find it affects daily tasks such as reading, watching television, driving or using a phone.

What causes astigmatism?

Astigmatism is usually caused by the natural shape of the eye. Many people are born with it, and it can change slowly over time.

It can also occur alongside short-sightedness or long-sightedness.

Can astigmatism be corrected?

Yes. Astigmatism can usually be corrected with prescription glasses or contact lenses.

During an eye test, your optician checks your prescription and measures whether astigmatism is present. If needed, lenses can be made to help focus light properly and improve clarity.

Do elderly patients get astigmatism?

Yes. Astigmatism can affect people of all ages, including elderly patients. In older adults, changes in vision may also be linked to cataracts, dry eye, macular degeneration, diabetes or other eye conditions.

That is why regular eye tests are important, especially if vision becomes blurred or changes suddenly.

When should you book an eye test?

You should book an eye test if you notice:

  • Blurry or distorted vision

  • Headaches when reading

  • Eye strain

  • Difficulty seeing TV clearly

  • Sudden changes in vision

  • Problems with your current glasses
